Route Overview & Local Insights

This 8.2km out-and-back route offers some of the most consistent, flat, and traffic-free running in Dumfries. Starting in the Greystone area by the River Nith, you’ll join the Maxwelltown Railway Path—a beautifully paved, 100% tarmac trail that serves as a green artery through the town. With zero meters of ascent, it is an ideal course for interval training, a sustained tempo run, or a relaxing recovery session. The path is well-sheltered, providing a reliable surface in all Scottish weather conditions, and leads you directly toward the Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary before you turn back for the return leg.

The Maxwelltown Railway Path follows the historic footprint of the Castle Douglas and Dumfries Railway, which first opened in the 1850s. Today, instead of steam engines, the corridor is a haven for local wildlife and active commuters. Running here offers a unique perspective of the Maxwelltown suburb, passing through leafy embankments that feel remarkably secluded despite being so close to the town center. It’s a favorite among local harriers for its simplicity and the way it connects the riverside charm of the Nith to the western edges of the "Queen of the South."
