Explore the Helvellyn and Whiteside via Grisedale
Location: Glenridding, The Lake District National Park, England
This 20.5km clockwise loop from Glenridding packs in nearly 900 metres of climbing, making it a demanding day out for an experienced fell runner. The route starts deceptively, giving you a few kilometres of steady, runnable valley track to warm up on as you head through Patterdale. Don't be fooled by the gentle start; this section is just the approach for the main event. The surface is a mix of trail and some short paved sections, but this is a mountain run through and through.
The character changes completely as you turn up towards Grisedale. The ascent to the summit of Helvellyn is a long, sustained grind on rocky and uneven paths that will have you on your hands at times. Good footing is essential. As you gain the ridge, be aware of how exposed you are; the weather can be significantly different up here compared to the valley floor, so go prepared. At 935 metres, the summit is the high point of the run, and you’ll have earned the view.
Your descent via Whiteside is just as challenging as the climb. It’s technical and steep, with loose rock that requires constant concentration to avoid a slip. It will test tired legs and ankles. Once you’re off the main fell, the gradient eases and the final few kilometres back to Glenridding become runnable again on grassy tracks and clearer paths. Trail shoes with an aggressive, deep lug are non-negotiable for the terrain on the tops, regardless of the weather.
