Location: Scraptoft, England

This is a straightforward 5.0 km out-and-back, run entirely on the sealed tarmac surface of Covert Lane. You’ll start in Scraptoft and follow the lane until it finishes, then simply turn around. The 100% paved footing means it’s a run for road shoes in any weather, with a consistent surface that is well-suited for pacing a steady effort or a tempo session. There are no significant junctions or turns to think about once you are on the lane itself.

The 23 metres of total ascent is barely noticeable in the legs, presenting as a very gentle undulation rather than a proper climb. You’ll feel a slight rise over the first couple of kilometres on the way out, which then becomes a welcome slight downhill on the return leg. The route runs between open agricultural fields for most of its length, giving it a less built-up feel than a typical suburban road run. It’s an exposed route, so you will want to factor in any wind on the day.

The turnaround point is simply the end of the public road, making navigation exceptionally simple. From there, you just retrace your steps back to the start point in Scraptoft. This predictable out-and-back format is useful for measuring your effort, as you’ll have a clear halfway mark and cover the exact same ground twice. It functions as a reliable, accessible route for a planned workout when you just need to get the distance done without thinking about where you are going.
