Explore the Walthamstow Waterways
Location: London, England
This 14.8 km loop is almost entirely flat and paved, making it a predictable surface for a long training run. You can start anywhere on the circuit, but it’s essential to check opening times for the Walthamstow Wetlands section before setting out, as access is restricted. Given the surface is 90% pavement or hard-packed towpath, standard road shoes are fine.
The run combines the engineered paths of the Wetlands with more typical London canal towpaths. If you run it clockwise, the first section takes you through the reservoirs before you head south towards Hackney Marshes. Footing is reliable, but expect to share the towpaths with pedestrians and cyclists. With effectively zero climbing, it’s possible to hold a steady pace for the whole distance.
You’ll pass the large, open water of the reservoirs, then follow paths alongside the river and canal. The route then opens into the green space of Hackney Marshes for the return leg. The character of the run is a mix of managed nature reserve and functional urban waterway, with consistent underfoot conditions throughout.
