Explore the Cartmel 5
Location: Cartmel, The Lake District National Park, England
This 5.0 km route is a lollipop shape, heading out from Cartmel village on a short stem before opening into a trail loop and returning the same way. The first section out of the village is paved, but this quickly gives way to unpaved surfaces, so you'll be on trail for the majority of the run. It has the feel of a classic cross-country course, good for a sharp effort or a varied training session.
With 80% of the route being off-road, a pair of trail shoes is the best choice. The surface is a mix of compacted dirt, stone tracks, and some grassy paths which can become slick after rain. The 76m of ascent isn't delivered in one big hit; instead, it's a series of rolling undulations across the loop section that will keep you working. It's enough to test your legs without requiring a sustained grind.
Once on the main loop, you’re out in open countryside with some decent views across the rolling landscape and, at points, back towards Cartmel Priory. After completing the circuit through the fields, you rejoin the initial track. The final stretch is a straight run back into the village, retracing your steps to the start point.
