Explore the Keynsham River and Wood Run
Location: keynsham, England
This 11.1 km route is a lollipop shape, mostly on unpaved ground. You’ll follow an out-and-back path along the River Avon, with a short loop through woodland at the furthest point. At only 10% paved, and with riverside sections prone to mud and flooding after rain, it’s a run for trail shoes in anything but the driest conditions. The minimal 33m of total ascent is spread out, making it feel almost entirely flat and suitable for a consistent pace.
You start by heading north from Keynsham, following the river path. This initial section is a straight out-and-back on grass and dirt track which can become very soft underfoot in the wet. After approximately 5.0 km, the course turns away from the water and takes you onto the woodland loop through Hencliff Wood. The surface changes to more defined, sheltered paths here, offering a bit of variety from the open river bank.
Once you complete the loop in the wood, you’ll rejoin the main river path and simply retrace your steps south back to the start. The return leg is straightforward as you’ll have seen the terrain on the way out. Be mindful that the riverside path is quite exposed, which you'll notice on a windy day. Pay attention to your footing on the return if the ground is slick.
