Explore the Keynsham Railway and River Run
Location: Keynsham, England
This 5.6 km lollipop route is almost entirely flat, combining firm railway paths with softer riverside trails. You head out from Keynsham along a short stretch of the Monarch Way before joining the old railway path. This section is straight and the surface is predictable, making it a good place to settle into your pace. It forms the 'stick' of the lollipop, which you'll run twice. The loop itself takes you off the railway line and onto the path that follows the bank of the River Avon.
The character of the run changes on the riverside section. The surface is more varied here, with dirt paths through fields that are noticeably less even underfoot than the railway path. You’ll follow the river downstream before looping back to rejoin the railway path for the return leg. Because it's an out-and-back stem with a loop at the end, the final kilometre or so will be familiar territory, letting you know exactly how far you have left to run.
With only 20% of the route on tarmac, shoe choice depends on the weather. In dry conditions, a standard road shoe will be sufficient. However, the riverside paths can get very muddy and heavy going after rain, so you’ll want a shoe with better grip for much of the year. Be aware that in periods of very high water, sections of the path next to the River Avon can be affected by flooding and may be closed.
