Explore the Burnsall Fell from Hebden
Location: Hebden, England
This 8.3 km out-and-back starts with a flat deception. From the start in Hebden, you’ll follow the riverside path along Wharfedale. The ground here is fast and straightforward, letting you get into a rhythm before the real work begins. This section is an easy warm-up, but keep in mind you’ll be running it again at the end on tired legs when the flat might feel like more of a drag.
The route turns sharply off the riverside and begins the main climb up Burnsall Fell. The 268 metres of ascent are packed into a short, steep section, so expect a proper lung-burner. The surface changes to classic fell terrain: grassy, uneven, and with rocky patches that require concentration. This is open access land. The descent back down is fast, but the mixed surface means you’ll need to watch your footing, especially if it’s been wet.
Once you’re back down on the Wharfedale path, it’s a simple case of retracing your steps to the finish in Hebden. Given the terrain on the fell, proper trail shoes are essential for this one; road shoes won’t give you the grip you need for the climb or the descent. It’s a classic fell effort in a compact package: a tough, concentrated climb followed by a rapid downhill, bookended by two easy kilometres.
