Explore the Fallowfield 5
Location: Manchester, England
This 5.1 km out-and-back uses a section of the Fallowfield Loop, a repurposed railway line. The entire route is on a wide, paved multi-use path, so road shoes are the correct choice. With only 10m of total ascent, the course is completely flat, making it suitable for pace work or testing your speed. Since it’s a dedicated path away from traffic, you can get into a consistent rhythm without worrying about road crossings or junctions.
The route heads out for roughly 2.55 km before you turn and retrace your steps. The path itself is a green corridor cutting behind residential areas of south Manchester. You'll run between trees and scrubland, with occasional views of the backs of houses and light industrial units. Be aware that this is a popular route for local runners, walkers, and cyclists, so you'll be sharing the space, particularly during evenings and at weekends.
Because of its straightforward nature and predictable surface, this is a functional training run. It works well for an uninterrupted, accurately measured 5 km effort without having to navigate city streets. The turnaround point is arbitrary; you simply run to the halfway mark and head back. The linear shape also means it's simple to extend the run in either direction if you want to add more distance.
