Explore the Upton Towans 5

Location: Connor Downs, England

This 5km loop is run entirely on soft surfaces through the Upton Towans nature reserve. The route is 100% off-road, mixing sandy trails with grassy paths and some sections of more compact earth. It’s a good option for a short trail run where the main challenge is the surface underfoot, not any significant elevation gain.

You'll run the circuit anticlockwise. The difficulty isn't gradient, but the sections of deeper, shifting sand which can make maintaining a steady pace tricky. The path winds through open heathland and gives you occasional views of the nearby coastal dunes. As it’s a clear loop with multiple access points, you can join it from various places.

With only 21 metres of total ascent, the route feels flat. Any climbs are just short, gentle rises in the ground. Trail shoes are the best choice to handle the mix of sand, grass and potentially slick ground if it has been wet. Road shoes would likely struggle, especially in the sandier parts. It’s a straightforward circuit for anyone looking for a quick run on natural surfaces.
