Explore the Porthleven - Loe Loop
Location: Porthleven, England
This 6km loop out of Porthleven is a proper mixed-terrain run, with about a third on paved surfaces and the rest on varied trail. It's a logical clockwise circuit, but as a loop, you can pick it up from any point. You get a bit of everything here: wooded paths, a section of coast path, and some connecting lanes. It’s a good option if you want a varied training run that gets you off the tarmac without being overly technical.
Starting from Porthleven and heading clockwise, you’ll begin with a gradual climb on the path toward Penrose House. The route then straightens out, running alongside the edge of The Loe, Cornwall's largest freshwater lake. After this inland section, the path joins the coast path for the return leg. This part is more exposed and offers wide views of the sea before you turn back inland via Loe Bar Road to complete the loop.
The 82m of total ascent feels like gently rolling hills rather than one big effort, with the main climb concentrated near the start. Footing is changeable throughout. You’ll be on firm trails and some tarmac, but expect softer, sandy ground on the section around Loe Bar, which can slow the pace. Because of the mix, a road-to-trail shoe is a good choice, as standard road shoes might struggle for grip on the looser or wetter trail sections.
