Explore the Prestbury Hilly Loop
Location: Prestbury, England
This 5.5km loop around Prestbury uses a near even split of paved roads and unpaved trails. Because it’s a circuit, you can start from any point. The mixed surface means you’re switching from predictable pavement to softer ground along the Bollin Valley Trail and a path by the golf course. Given the unpaved sections, trail shoes are the safer option, especially after wet weather when some parts will hold mud and be slippery underfoot. Road shoes might manage in summer, but you'll want better traction.
The route feels relatively flat for the first half before you get to the climbs. The 54m of total ascent is concentrated in the second half, so be prepared for a change in effort. You’ll first find a steady incline on Macclesfield Road. This is followed by a short, sharper section through the grounds of King's School up towards Chelford Road, which will get your heart rate up before you reach the highest point of the run. It's not a long grind, but it's a definite uphill push.
The course takes you from the Bollin Valley Trail, past a golf course, and through the school grounds, so the environment underfoot changes throughout. After the main climb to Chelford Road, the rest of the loop is a welcome descent. You’ll follow the roads back down towards the village, allowing for a faster pace as you complete the circuit.
