Explore the Cwmgwrach - Resolfen Loop
Location: Cwmgwrach, Wales
This 10.5 km route is a loop of two distinct halves, connecting Cwmgwrach and Resolfen almost entirely on unpaved surfaces. You can technically start anywhere, but running it clockwise from near either village gives it a good structure. With about 90% of the route on forest tracks and canal towpaths, trail shoes are a sensible choice, especially after rain when the ground can get soft underfoot. The few paved sections are mostly on road crossings and bridges.
Following the loop clockwise, the first section guides you through Rheola Forest. This is where you will encounter all the elevation. The 122m of total ascent is spread out, giving the route a consistently rolling feel rather than one with any single, tough climb. The tracks through the forest are generally good quality, so you can expect reliable footing even with the tree cover.
After leaving the forest, you’ll cross a river bridge to join the canal towpath for the return leg. This half is completely flat, offering a real contrast to the undulating forest trails. It’s a good place to settle into a steady rhythm or work on your tempo for a few kilometres. The path follows the canal back towards the start, completing a solid, varied circuit that serves well for regular training.
