Explore the Cwmgwrach Canal 5
Location: Cwmgwrach, Wales
This is a 4.9 km out-and-back along the Neath Canal towpath, and with zero metres of recorded ascent, it is effectively dead flat. The whole route takes place on a well-maintained towpath, meaning you can focus on your pace without worrying about traffic or navigation. For this reason, it’s a reliable choice for a tempo run, a 5K time trial, or just a steady, uninterrupted effort.
The course is simple: you follow the canal for just under 2.5 km, turn around at the designated point, and return along the same path. The footing is entirely off-road but is generally firm and non-technical, so road shoes will be fine for most of the year. After a period of prolonged rain, the surface can soften and hold some puddles, in which case you might want a shoe with a bit more grip to feel secure.
The run itself is straightforward. There are no hills to break your rhythm and no junctions to think about. You just have the canal on one side and the path ahead of you. This makes it a good route for testing your current pace or settling into a consistent rhythm without the usual distractions of an urban or complex trail run. You’ll know exactly what to expect on the return leg.
