Lace up your trail shoes for this rewarding 11.2km loop through the rugged Ochil Hills. Starting from Castle Road in Dollar, this route is a classic "Short Local" (SL) fell run that trades pavement for 100% off-road adventure. With 345 meters of ascent, you’ll encounter a steady climb that tests your lungs, particularly as you ascend above the tranquil Glenquey Reservoir. The terrain is characteristically Scottish—expect a mix of firm tracks and potentially boggy sections depending on the season—offering runners a challenging "Hilly" 4/5 rating punctuated by sweeping views of the surrounding glens and the dramatic Dollar Glen below.
Dollar itself is a historic village steeped in character, once a hub for the textile industry thanks to the fast-flowing burns of the Ochils. As you navigate the loop, you are running in the shadow of Castle Campbell, the 15th-century "Castle of Gloom" which commands the top of the glen. This area was famously frequented by the poet Robert Burns, and the quiet, atmospheric trails around Glenquey Reservoir feel largely unchanged since his time. After finishing your 11k effort, local runners recommend heading into the village for a well-earned coffee in one of the independent cafes along Bridge Street.
