This 19.7km point-to-point journey offers a unique "source to sea" experience, following the gentle downhill flow of the Water of Leith from the village of Balerno right into the heart of Edinburgh's historic port. With zero net ascent, this is a fast, predominantly flat route that transitions from lush, woodland trails to paved riverside paths. Runners will navigate a scenic corridor of green through the city, passing through iconic spots like Colinton Tunnel—famous for its stunning mural—the picturesque Dean Village, and the Royal Botanic Garden, making it an ideal long-run option for those who want a mix of quiet nature and urban exploration.
Steeped in industrial heritage, the Water of Leith was once the lifeblood of Edinburgh, powering over 70 mills that produced paper, flour, and fabric. As you run through Stockbridge and towards Leith, keep an eye out for the "6 Times" statues by Antony Gormley standing directly in the riverbed. Finishing in Leith provides a perfect post-run reward, as the area has transformed from a gritty maritime hub into one of the UK’s coolest neighborhoods, boasting some of the best coffee shops and seafood bistros in Scotland. It’s a route that captures the true soul of the capital, far away from the typical tourist crowds of the Royal Mile.
