This 5.2km loop through Carding Mill Valley offers a quintessential Shropshire hills running experience, packing a punch with 236m of vertical gain. Starting from the National Trust visitor center in Church Stretton, you'll tackle the steady, lung-busting climb of Dr. Mott's Road up to The Port Way. The terrain is largely well-trodden trails, but with sections surpassing 500m in elevation, you’ll feel the exposure as you reach the plateau. The descent through Lightspout Hollow is a technical treat, taking you past the famous waterfall on a rocky, winding path that requires nimble footwork before opening back up into the valley floor.
Church Stretton is affectionately known as "Little Switzerland" due to its dramatic hill scenery, and the Long Mynd is the crown jewel of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Port Way, which you’ll traverse at the summit, is an ancient ridgeway used for millennia by Neolithic traders and later by cattle drovers. As you run, keep an eye out for the hardy wild Long Mynd ponies that roam the heather-clad moorland. While the valley floor often feels sheltered, the weather on the plateau can shift instantly; locals know that when the mist rolls in over the Mynd, even a short 5k requires respect and careful navigation.
This course has sections close to or above 500m. Weather conditions can change at short notice, so plan accordingly.
