Tackle this rewarding 10.2km SL loop that begins at the Harperrig Reservoir car park and climbs steadily toward the striking summit of West Cairn Hill. Runners will experience a diverse mix of terrain, starting with 10.0km of paved approach and wide trails before transitioning into the more technical, rugged textures of heather and grass. With 274m of ascent and sections reaching altitudes above 500m, this "Hilly" rated course demands respect. The stretch through Cauldstone Slap can become boggy and heavy going after rainfall, so expect a true Scottish hill-running experience where sturdy footwear and an eye on the changing mountain weather are essential.
West Lothian’s southern reaches offer a gateway into the wild Pentland Hills Regional Park, a landscape steeped in historical significance. The Cauldstone Slap itself is an ancient "drove road," once used by highlanders to herd cattle from the north down to the markets in the south. Running this route connects you to centuries of travel through these glens, offering panoramic views across the Forth Valley and toward the distant Highlands on a clear day. The reservoir at the start, Harperrig, is a peaceful haven for local wildlife and provides a dramatic, reflective backdrop for your post-run cool down.
This course has sections close to or above 500m. Weather conditions can change at short notice, so plan accordingly.
