Embark on a substantial 29.7km journey through West Dunbartonshire on Stage 2 of the John Muir Way. This point-to-point route offers a rewarding mix of terrain, balancing 45% paved surfaces with undulating country tracks and forest paths. Runners will experience a total ascent of 394m, with the most notable climb being the haul up toward the Gowk Hill area, which rewards your effort with breathtaking panoramic views of Loch Lomond and the southern Highlands. The trail is moderately hilly and provides a fantastic endurance challenge, transitioning from the lush, sheltered woodlands of Balloch into more exposed, expansive moorland and rural lanes as you approach the village of Strathblane.
This route carries deep historical resonance, forming a key part of the 134-mile coast-to-coast trail dedicated to John Muir, the "Father of the National Parks." Starting at the gateway to Scotland’s first National Park, you’ll run through landscapes that inspired Muir’s lifelong passion for wild places. The area is steeped in local heritage, passing through traditional farmland and skirting the edge of the dramatic Campsie Fells. As you traverse the "Campsie Fault" line, the shift in geology is striking, offering runners a firsthand look at the rugged transition between the Lowlands and the Highlands that defines this iconic Scottish corridor.
