Tackling the Skamper Callander Woods & Waterside Half Marathon offers a quintessential Scottish trail experience, blending challenging elevation with serene riverside finishes. This 21.2km loop kicks off with a punchy climb into Coilhallan Wood, where runners will find a mix of forest tracks and well-maintained paths. Prepare your quads for the ascent to 315m, which rewards you with breathtaking vistas of the Strathyre Valley before a technical 200m drop toward the shores of Loch Lubnaig. The final stretch transition to the tarmac of the Rob Roy Way provides a fast, flat, and paved recovery for the legs, leading you back into the heart of Callander.
Nestled within the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, Callander is often described as the "Gateway to the Highlands," and this route captures its dramatic transition from rolling Lowlands to rugged peaks. As you traverse the forest tracks, you are running through lands steeped in the folklore of Rob Roy MacGregor, the famous Scottish outlaw and folk hero who frequented these hills. Passing the historic Callander Kirk at the finish, runners can soak in the Victorian charm of a town that has served as a sanctuary for hikers and mountain runners for over a century, making it the perfect backdrop for a landmark half marathon distance.
