Starting from the charming residential heights of Sunnylaw, this 6.5km loop offers a fantastic blend of steady climbing and rewarding descents. Runners will tackle approximately 136m of ascent as they leave Dunblane behind, transitioning from paved roads to the sheltered, atmospheric trails of the Sheriffmuir Big Wood. The route is predominantly on solid footing with about 5km of paved surfaces, making it a reliable choice for a hill session or an energetic midweek run. You’ll experience a moderate technical challenge as the forest paths wind through the timber, eventually opening up to provide glimpses of the rolling Stirlingshire countryside before a fast, gravity-assisted return to the town center.
Steeped in Scottish history, the Sheriffmuir area is famously known as the site of the 1715 Jacobite Rising battle. While this specific route stays focused on the lower wooded slopes and the quiet fringes of Dunblane, the air of the "Big Wood" carries the quiet stillness of the Ochil Hills’ foothills. As you climb out of Sunnylaw, you are following in the footsteps of centuries of travelers who moved between the Cathedral city of Dunblane and the high moors beyond. Local runners often favor this loop for its sheltered nature during the winter months, providing protection from the Perthshire winds while offering some of the best panoramic views of the Trossachs in the distance on a clear day.
