This 11.0km loop offers a fantastic blend of South Lanarkshire’s natural beauty and varied terrain, making it a favorite for local runners seeking a balanced workout. Starting at the historic Millheugh Bridge, you'll follow the winding path of the Avon Water, tackling a mix of paved sections and rugged trails. With 108m of ascent, the route is classified as hilly, featuring enough elevation to test your glutes without feeling overwhelming. The midpoint crossing at Duke’s Bridge provides a perfect natural reset, offering sweeping views of the river valley before you loop back through the lush, green corridors of Swinhill.
Beyond the trail, the area surrounding Millheugh and the Avon Water is steeped in Scotland’s industrial and social history. The Avon Water itself is the largest tributary of the River Clyde, and the gorge through which you run was once a bustling hub for sandstone quarrying and milling in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, the "Larkhall side" of the valley has reclaimed its tranquility, serving as a vital wildlife corridor where lucky runners might spot kingfishers or deer among the ancient woodlands. Running here feels like stepping back in time, traversing the same paths that once connected the historic estates of the Duke of Hamilton.
