This 10.0km loop offers a quintessential Shetland running experience, blending steady paved sections with the rugged, undulating coastal terrain of the Ness of Sound. Starting from Sea Road near Seafield Park, runners will face a moderate challenge with 173m of total ascent, categorized by its hilly nature. You can expect a mix of smooth road running and more technical, wind-swept coastal paths as you navigate the peninsula. The ascent is rewarding, providing sweeping views across Brei Wick and the erratic, beautiful shoreline that defines the southern edge of Lerwick—just be prepared for the exposed sections where the North Sea breeze will certainly test your pace.
Lerwick, the UK’s most northerly town, is steeped in maritime history and Norse heritage, and this route takes you through some of its most atmospheric landscapes. The "Sound" area was once a distinct farming township before being absorbed by the growing port town, and the Ness of Sound itself remains a local treasure for wildlife spotting; it is not uncommon to see seals bobbing in the water or a variety of seabirds nesting along the cliffs. Running here feels like stepping onto the edge of the world, where the modern amenities of the Seafield area quickly give way to the ancient, untamed beauty of the Shetland archipelago.
