This 10.3km loop from Yair Bridge offers a classic Scottish hill running experience, blending sheltered forest plantations with rugged, open moorland. The route is characterized by its significant 363m ascent, starting with a steady climb on wide forest tracks that allow you to find a solid rhythm before the terrain kicks up. As you break out of the treeline, you are faced with a challenging, steep push to the summit of the Three Brethren. The descent is a runner’s reward—a long, flowing downhill section back through the Yair Hill Forest that invites a fast pace and tests your technical footwork on mixed natural surfaces.
Steeped in Borders history, the "Three Brethren" are a trio of massive 16th-century dry stone cairns that mark the junction of the estates of Buccleuch, Selkirk, and Yair. Standing at the summit at 465 meters, these iconic landmarks provide panoramic views of the Tweed Valley and the Eildon Hills in the distance. Running here feels like traversing a corridor of time, as the route intersects parts of the Southern Upland Way, a long-distance path frequented by hikers and endurance athletes alike. Keep an eye out for local wildlife; the quiet pockets of the Yair forest are a sanctuary for red squirrels and roe deer.
