This 7.0km loop through the Leader Water Valley offers a quintessential Scottish Borders running experience, blending smooth paved sections with the natural charm of riverside trails. Starting from the iconic Leaderfoot, the route gently climbs with a modest 80m of ascent, making it an accessible run for those looking to enjoy a bit of elevation without feeling overwhelmed. You'll head north along the west bank toward Cowdenknowes, where the terrain provides a rhythmic flow perfectly suited for a steady tempo run. The return leg via the Diamond Jubilee Path on the east side offers a refreshing change of perspective, keeping the scenery varied as you wind back toward the start.
The area surrounding Drygrange Hall is steeped in both architectural and natural history. The "Leaderfoot Bridge" is actually a collection of three distinct bridges—including the towering red sandstone viaduct and the historic Old Drygrange Bridge—spanning the River Tweed near its confluence with the Leader Water. As you run, you'll be passing through a landscape famously celebrated in Scottish folklore and poetry; Cowdenknowes itself is the setting for the traditional ballad "The Broom of Cowdenknowes." Running here feels like traveling through time, with the Roman remains of Trimontium nearby and the lush, verdant valley floor providing a peaceful backdrop that has remained largely unchanged for centuries.
