Lace up your trail shoes for a rewarding 6.8km ascent through the Eildon Hills, the most iconic landmark in the Scottish Borders. Starting from Dingleton Road in Melrose, this loop follows the historic St Cuthbert’s Way before hitting a punishing but exhilarating series of climbs up Mid Hill and North Hill. With nearly 400m of vertical gain over a relatively short distance, this is pure hill running territory: expect steep, grassy paths, some loose scree, and technical descents that will test your footwork. The effort is immediately rewarded at the summits with 360-degree panoramic views over the River Tweed and the rolling Border landscape.
Rich in myth and history, the Eildon Hills are steeped in local lore, once known as the 'Trimontium' or Three Peaks by the Romans who built a major fort nearby. Legend has it that the hills were split into three by the wizard Michael Scott, and they are famously associated with the legend of Thomas the Rhymer. As you run these ancient paths, you are following in the footsteps of centuries of pilgrims and soldiers. After your run, the town of Melrose offers the perfect recovery setting, with its stunning 12th-century Abbey and plenty of local cafes to refuel with a well-earned coffee and scone.
