This 5.0km loop offers a punchy and rewarding escape into the Scottish Borders countryside, starting directly from the historic town of Lauder. As a Category SL (Short Local) course, it packs a significant 134m of ascent, primarily as you climb away from the Lauder Burn and up the flanks of Stauchy Hill. Runners can expect a mix of firm, well-trodden paths following the iconic Southern Upland Way, passing the local golf course early on. The terrain is notably hilly, making it an excellent choice for hill repeats or a fast-paced trail session where the steep gradients provide a natural interval workout against a backdrop of rolling moorland.
Steeped in local history, this route traverses sections of the Southern Upland Way, Scotland’s first official long-distance footway. Lauder itself is an ancient Royal Burgh, and as you ascend Stauchley Hill, you are running through lands that have been shaped by centuries of agriculture and border history. From the higher vantage points, you’ll get sweeping views of the Leader Valley and the impressive Thirlestane Castle nearby. It is a favorite among local harriers for its accessibility and the way it transitions quickly from the quiet streets of the village into the rugged, atmospheric beauty of the Lammermuir Hills' southern fringes.
