Experience the tranquil beauty of the Scottish Borders on this 13.1km loop through Kelso, a route that rewards runners with a perfect blend of history and nature. Starting in the heart of town, the course takes you out along the well-surfaced old railway path toward Roxburgh, offering a gentle, steady grade that is ideal for locking in a consistent rhythm. The return leg via the Border Abbeys Way and Mayfield Riverside path brings you close to the water's edge, where you will navigate a mix of paved sections and riverside trails. With only 65 meters of ascent, it is a relatively flat and fast multi-terrain run, though local runners know to expect some muddy patches along the Teviot after a classic Scottish downpour.
Kelso is often described as the most architectural of the Border towns, and this route highlights exactly why. As you cross the Tweed, you’ll catch glimpses of the magnificent ruins of Kelso Abbey, once one of the grandest monastic houses in Scotland. The community here has a deep-rooted connection to the land; you’ll pass through areas where the Teviot meets the Tweed, a world-renowned spot for Atlantic salmon fishing. Running through these landscapes feels like a journey through time, following the same paths used by monks and border reivers centuries ago, all while enjoying the modern serenity of the rolling countryside that defines this picturesque corner of Roxburghshire.
