Experience a slice of Borders railway history on this 5.8km out-and-back dash starting from Maxwellheugh, just south of Kelso. This route is a favorite for Kelso locals looking for a flat, fast, and traffic-free session, as it follows the perfectly level grade of a dismantled railway line. With only 10 meters of total ascent, it is an ideal course for interval training, a recovery jog, or a PB attempt. The terrain is unpaved but well-trodden, offering a natural feel underfoot as you run through corridors of local flora and past quiet agricultural fields toward the village of Sprouston.
Kelso is often regarded as the most charming of the Scottish Borders towns, and this route explores its industrial heritage. You'll be running along the remnants of the Kelso branch of the North British Railway, which once connected this hub to the main line at Tweedmouth. While the tracks are long gone, the sense of a bygone era remains in the stone bridge works and the linear perspective of the trail. After your run, take a short stroll to view the grand ruins of Kelso Abbey or the junction of the Tweed and Teviot rivers, which have drawn visitors to this historic market town for centuries.
