Tackle a classic Scottish Borders ascent on this 8.5km loop that packs a punch with over 300m of climbing. Starting from the heart of Galashiels, you'll quickly transition from paved town streets to the rugged, grassy slopes of Meigle Hill. This Category SL (Short Local) hill run is a favorite for those who love a vertical challenge; it’s an unforgiving "straight up" start on soft grass that will test your glutes and lungs. Once you peak, the route rewards you with a sweeping descent and a flat section to find your cadence again before a fast, technical drop back into the town center. Expect varied footing and a true feel for Borders fell running.
Beyond the physical effort, this route is steeped in Scottish legend. As you crest the summit, keep an eye out for "Wallace's Putting Stone," a massive glacial erratic named after the national hero, William Wallace. Local folklore suggests the guardian of Scotland threw this giant boulder from a neighboring hillside. Meigle Hill itself offers some of the most commanding views in Selkirkshire, providing a panoramic look over the Gala Water valley and the Eildon Hills in the distance. Running here feels like moving through a living history book, where the steep terrain has been weathered by both ancient glaciers and centuries of Scottish heritage.
