Tackling the Cheese Well loop offers a quintessential Scottish Borders trail experience, balancing a challenging ascent with high-reward vistas. Covering 16.2km with 385m of elevation gain, this route begins with a steady heart-pumping climb through the lush forest tracks of Walkerburn. As you break out onto the open hillside along the Cross Borders Drove Road, the terrain shifts from sheltered woodland to exposed, rolling ridges. The footing is a varied mix of rugged forest trails and faster paved sections, culminating in a rhythmic, flat riverside dash alongside the River Tweed that allows you to open up your stride for the final stretch back from Innerleithen.
Steeped in local folklore, the route’s namesake is a natural spring where travelers once left offerings of cheese to the "fairies" of Minch Moor to ensure safe passage. This ancient path forms part of the historic Drove Roads, used for centuries by highlanders moving livestock to market. Running here feels like moving through a living history book; between the mystical associations of the Cheese Well and the industrial heritage of the textile mills visible in the valley below, you’ll find plenty of mental stimulation to match the physical exertion of the climb.
