Conquering the ascent of Ben Vrackie offers a quintessential Scottish trail running experience, packing a punch over its 9.1km out-and-back distance. Starting from the car park on Baledmund Road, you’ll trade the paved sections of Pitlochry for a steady climb through lush woodland and open moorland along the Moulin Burn. With a significant 634m of elevation gain, the terrain transitions from well-defined paths to more rugged, rocky steps as you push toward the summit. Reaching the 841m peak rewards your effort with breathtaking panoramic views of the Cairngorms and the Tay Valley, but remember that the high-altitude section above 500m is exposed; even a sunny day in town can mean biting winds at the trig point.
Pitlochry is a historic gateway to the Highlands, and Ben Vrackie—meaning "Speckled Mountain"—is its towering guardian. The area is steeped in Victorian charm, originally gaining popularity as a health resort due to its crisp air and mountain spring water. As you run through the lower slopes of Moulin, you are passing through lands that have been inhabited for centuries, with the nearby ruins of Caisteal Dubh (The Black Castle) hinting at the region’s medieval past. After your descent, local runners often congregate at the historic Moulin Inn to refuel, a spot that has been serving weary travelers since 1695.
This course has sections close to or above 500m. Weather conditions can change at short notice, so plan accordingly.
