This 4.6km loop through Kinnoull Hill Woodland Park is a quintessential Scottish trail run that packs a significant punch for its distance. With 172m of vertical gain and a category SL classification, you’ll trade flat pavement for rugged, hilly woodland tracks. The ascent is brisk but rewarding, leading you through towering Douglas firs and Scots pines. Runners can expect firm forest paths that can become slick with West Coast moisture, so grippy trail shoes are highly recommended. As you crest the summit, the trail opens up to provide one of the most iconic views in Perthshire, overlooking the winding River Tay and the fertile Carse of Gowrie.
Kinnoull Hill is steeped in romantic history, most notably evidenced by the 18th-century Kinnoull Tower that sits perched precariously on the cliff edge. Built by the Ninth Earl of Kinnoull to mimic the castles he admired along the Rhine in Germany, the ruin serves as a spectacular midpoint landmark for your run. The park itself was Scotland’s first ever inaugural woodland park, established in 1991, and it remains a haven for local biodiversity; keep an eye out for red squirrels and roe deer darting through the undergrowth as you navigate the quiet, winding descents back toward the trailhead.
