Tucked away near Kelty, the Blairadam Forest Loop offers a quintessential Scottish trail running experience across 5.4km of undulating, off-road terrain. With an ascent of 86m spread across rolling hills, this route provides a moderate challenge for trail enthusiasts looking to escape the tarmac. Starting near Main Street, runners will quickly leave the urban fringe behind to navigate the rugged "Bing" before diving into the lush canopy of Woodend Wood. The terrain is entirely unpaved, featuring a mix of forest tracks and dirt paths that require steady footwork, especially during the wetter months when the Fife mud truly comes into play.
Steeped in industrial and natural history, Blairadam Forest was once the estate of the Adam family, renowned architects and landowners who transformed this landscape in the 18th century. As you run through the towering conifers and ancient woodland, you are crossing ground that once hummed with coal mining activity, now reclaimed by nature and managed by Forestry and Land Scotland. Local runners value this loop for its year-round shelter and the serene atmosphere of the Blairadam estate, which feels worlds away from the nearby M90. It’s a perfect spot to observe local wildlife, from deer to red squirrels, while testing your climbs on the "hilly" sections of this scenic loop.
