Route Overview & Local Insights

Experience the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands on this 9.0km loop around Newtonmore. Perfect for runners looking for a moderate challenge, the Wildcat Trail offers a mix of terrain with approximately 76m of ascent, providing just enough elevation to get the heart rate up without being overly punishing. Starting from Strone Road, you'll traverse a variety of surfaces including woodland paths, riverside tracks, and quiet paved sections along Glenbanchor Road. The route is exceptionally scenic, offering sprawling views of the Monadhliath Mountains and the Spey Valley, making it a favorite for those who enjoy immersive nature runs in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park.

Newtonmore is steeped in Highland history and is famously known as the home of the Clan Macpherson. The Wildcat Trail itself is named after the Scottish Wildcat, Britain’s only remaining large wild predator, which still finds sanctuary in the dense forests nearby. Keep an eye out for the "Wildcat Experience" sculptures scattered around the village as you transition between the trail and the local roads. This area serves as a gateway to the high tops, yet this specific 9km circuit remains accessible for most year-round runners, offering a true taste of Highland wilderness while staying conveniently close to the village's welcoming cafes and local heritage sites.
