This 9.1km loop through Glen Tilt offers a quintessential Scottish trail running experience, blending accessible terrain with breathtaking Highland scenery. Starting from the Glen Tilt car park near Kirkton of Lude, runners will enjoy a relatively gentle 135m of ascent on a route that is largely paved and well-maintained. The course follows the energetic River Tilt upstream along the Glen Tilt Trail before crossing and returning via the forested Glen Banvie Trail. It is a perfect choice for those seeking a "Small" (SL) categorized loop that provides enough undulation to challenge the lungs without the technical difficulty of high-mountain ridges.
Steeped in geological and social history, Glen Tilt is famous among naturalists as the site where James Hutton, the "Father of Modern Geology," found evidence of igneous rock intrusion in the late 18th century. As you run past the dramatic gorges and ancient woodlands, you are traversing part of the historic Atholl Estate, once a royal hunting forest. The area is a haven for local wildlife; keep an alert eye out for red squirrels in the pine canopies or red deer traversing the lower slopes of the surrounding Munros. Running here feels like stepping back in time, offering a sense of isolation and grandeur just a short distance from the village of Blair Atholl.
