This 16.1km out-and-back route offers a quintessential Highland running experience, taking you deep into the rugged landscapes of the Cairngorms. Starting with a steady, rhythm-building climb along a valley track, the terrain eventually transitions into more technical mountain paths as you push toward the summit of A’ Mharconaich. With a total ascent of 665m and significant sections sustained above the 500m contour line, runners should be prepared for a demanding cardiovascular workout and breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. The descent allows for a fast, flowing return down the valley, but the exposed nature of the ridge means checking the mountain forecast is essential before setting off.
Located near the Drumochter Pass, A’ Mharconaich (translated from Gaelic as "The Place of the Horses") is one of the four Munros that dominate this high-altitude plateau. This area serves as a natural gateway between the Lowlands and the Highlands, historically used by cattle drovers and now a haven for fell runners and hill walkers. The environment here is fragile and atmospheric; it’s not uncommon to spot red deer or ptarmigan amidst the heather and scree. Running here provides a profound sense of isolation and connection to Scotland’s wilderness, following trails that have been carved into the granite landscape over centuries of Highland history.
This course has sections close to or above 500m. Weather conditions can change at short notice, so plan accordingly.
