Tucked away in the Sidlaw Hills, the Lundie Crags route offers a fantastic 7.1km loop that punches well above its weight for variety and scenery. Starting from the dedicated parking area, you’ll tackle a steady ascent of 150m toward the prominent transmitter tower. The first half of the run stays largely on well-maintained tracks, making it a great choice for those transitioning from road to trail. Once you reach the top, however, the run transforms; you’ll navigate a narrower, technical single-track trail along the dramatic escarpment before plunging into a beautiful forest descent that leads you past the serene Ledcrieff Loch. It is a hilly challenge that rewards every ounce of effort with panoramic vistas across Perth and Kinross.
Lundie Crags is a cherished spot for local hill runners and is steeped in the agricultural and natural history of the Angus and Perthshire border. The area is part of the Sidlaw range, which translates from Gaelic as "the fairy hills," and as you run along the ridge, it’s easy to see why the mist-covered peaks sparked such folklore. Keep an eye out for diverse birdlife near Ledcrieff Loch, a popular spot for fly fishing and a peaceful midpoint for your session. This route captures the true spirit of Scottish trail running—rugged terrain, sudden transitions from dense woodland to open moorland, and some of the best views of the Tay Valley you can find on a short-distance circuit.
