This 6.6km circuit offers a quintessential Fife running experience, blending serene riverside stretches with rugged industrial heritage. Starting with a fast, flat section along the banks of the mighty Firth of Tay, runners can find their rhythm on the paved surfaces while enjoying expansive views across the water toward the Carse of Gowrie. The intensity picks up as the route turns inland, transitioning into a Category SL (Small Local) hill run. You'll tackle a steady 108m ascent through the local quarries, where the terrain becomes more undulating and rewarding. The climb is manageable for most fitness levels, providing a great cardiovascular boost before a sweeping descent leads you back down into the heart of Newburgh.
Newburgh itself is a historic royal burgh steeped in character, once famous for its thriving linoleum industry and active salmon fishing. As you pass near the edge of the town, you’re running through a landscape that has been shaped by centuries of quarrying and trade. To the east lies the ruins of Lindores Abbey, where the first written record of Scotch whisky production was found in 1494. The "hilly" nature of the second half of this run serves as a reminder of the Highland Boundary Fault that looms nearby, offering runners a taste of the wilder Scottish terrain while remaining close to the comforts of the village. It is a perfect route for those who want to combine a technical hill session with the natural beauty of the Tay coastline.
