Test your lungs and your legs on this steep, rewarding 5.9km circuit of Birnham Hill. Rated a 5 for hilliness, this off-road trail tackles 319m of ascent, making it a classic "Category SL" short-distance hill run. Starting from Birnam Glen Road, you’ll trade pavement for rugged forest paths and rocky stretches as you climb toward the summit. The terrain is entirely unpaved, offering a pure trail experience that requires focused footwork on the technical descents, but the panoramic views across the Tay Valley and toward the distant Highlands from the "Crag" make every ounce of effort worthwhile.
Steeped in literary and ancient history, Birnam is famous worldwide for the "Birnam Wood" mentioned in Shakespeare's Macbeth. As you navigate the lower slopes, you are running through a landscape that was once part of a vast royal forest used by Scottish monarchs for hunting. The hill itself is a geological landmark, largely composed of slate which was extensively quarried in the 19th century to roof the houses of nearby Dunkeld. Today, the area is a haven for red squirrels and ospreys, providing a serene, wild backdrop for runners looking to escape the hustle of the city and connect with Scotland’s deep-rooted heritage.
