This 6.6km loop offers a quintessential Scottish hill running experience, blending steady climbs with breathtaking views over Strathmore. Starting from Loyal Road in Alyth, you’ll tackle a 169m ascent that takes you across the rugged terrain of the Hill of Alyth and the Commonty of Alyth Hill. The course is a balanced "SL" (Short/Local) category run, featuring a mix of paved surfaces and traditional hill paths. Runners can expect a challenging but rewarding push to the summits, where the heather-clad landscape opens up, followed by a fast, flowing descent along the historic Old Drove Road. It is an ideal mid-distance circuit for those looking to build elevation strength while enjoying a technical, multi-terrain adventure.
Steeped in history, this route follows a significant section of the Cateran Trail, a long-distance circular path named after the cattle thieves—known as Caterans—who raided the rich lands of Strathmore from the 15th to the 17th centuries. As you traverse the Old Drove Road, you are literally following in the footsteps of ancient Highland drovers who moved their livestock across these hills to market. The town of Alyth itself serves as a gateway to the Grampian Mountains, and its unique topography, shaped by the Highland Boundary Fault, provides some of the most dramatic and accessible trail running in Perthshire. Keep an eye out for local wildlife and the prehistoric standing stones that dot the surrounding landscape.
