Experience the sheer natural beauty of Highland Perthshire on this 5.2km loop through the Birks of Aberfeldy. This route may be short, but it packs a punch with 173m of climbing across a predominantly "hilly" terrain. Runners will navigate a mix of paved sections and well-maintained woodland trails, following the Moness Burn as it crashes over a series of dramatic waterfalls. Expect a steady, heart-pumping ascent on the way up, rewarded by a fast and flowing descent back toward the village via a section of the historic Rob Roy Way and Urlar Road. It is a fantastic choice for trail runners looking to improve their hill strength while surrounded by ancient birch, oak, and hazel trees.
The "Birks" (Scots for birch trees) gained worldwide fame after Robert Burns visited in 1787 and penned his iconic poem, "The Birks o’ Aberfeldie." As you run past the cascading falls, you’ll find a stone statue of the Bard himself sitting on a bench, marking the spot where he is said to have found his inspiration. This area is steeped in Scottish history, with the trails serving as a gateway to the rugged landscape that once sheltered the outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor. Running here feels like stepping back into the 18th century, offering a serene yet challenging escape just a stone's throw from the heart of Aberfeldy.
