This 6.8km loop offers a quintessential Orkney running experience, blending the charming stone-clad streets of Stromness with the rugged beauty of the Atlantic coastline. Starting from Victoria Street, you’ll navigate a mix of paved roads and coastal paths with an approachable 35m of ascent, making it a "hilly" but manageable route for most levels. Runners can expect bracing sea air and unobstructed views of Hoy Sound and the Graemsay hills as they sweep around the Point of Ness, returning along Outertown Road where the elevation provides a stunning vantage point over the harbor before the final descent back into town.
Stromness is a town carved from the sea, and running here feels like moving through a living history book. As you pass the traditional gable-ended houses and narrows, you're following the same paths once trodden by Arctic whalers and Hudson’s Bay Company explorers. The area around the Point of Ness is a local favorite for birdwatching and seal spotting, so keep an eye on the shoreline. Local insight: the wind can be your greatest training partner or your toughest rival on this exposed course, so check the forecast and perhaps plan your effort to have the Atlantic breeze at your back for the final stretch.
