This 8.0km loop offers a quintessential Orkney running experience, blending steady coastal stretches with the moderate undulations of South Ronaldsay. Starting in the picturesque village of St Margaret’s Hope, most of the route takes place on paved surfaces, making it an excellent choice for a rhythmic tempo run or a scenic recovery effort. As you head around Hoxa Hill, expect a manageable 89m of ascent that rewards you with bracing sea air and expansive views across Scapa Flow. The terrain is predominantly solid underfoot, though the exposed nature of the Hoxa peninsula means you should be prepared for the Atlantic breeze to challenge your pace on the outward leg before turning back via the quiet lanes of Roeberry.
Steeped in maritime and wartime history, the area around St Margaret’s Hope serves as a gateway to the southern isles. As you traverse the Hoxa headland, you are running past layers of the past, from Iron Age broch sites to the significant remains of WWII coastal batteries that once guarded the entrance to the Royal Navy’s anchorage. The village itself is named after Queen Margaret, the "Maid of Norway," who tragically died here in 1290. Today, the sheltered bay provides a much calmer atmosphere, where you might spot seals bobbing in the harbor as you complete your circuit. It is a route that perfectly captures the rugged, stoic beauty of the Orkney landscape.
