This 10.3km loop from Blackwaterfoot offers a rugged and rewarding experience for runners seeking the true spirit of the Isle of Arran. Starting from the beach car park, you’ll trade paved roads for technical tracks that skirt the edge of the Shiskine Golf Course before descending through a dramatic cliff gap. The terrain is a mix of narrow coastal paths, rocky shores, and forested ascents with 169m of elevation gain. Be prepared for stony sections that require nimble footwork, especially as you climb to the 112-metre peak of Torr Righ Mor woods, where you are rewarded with sweeping views of the Kilbrannan Sound before a fast, technical descent back toward the coast.
The area is steeped in Scottish legend, most notably at the King’s Caves—a series of natural sandstone caverns where Robert the Bruce is said to have encountered his famous spider. Running this route feels like a journey through time, passing through the ancient King’s Cave Forest and over land that has seen centuries of maritime history. Blackwaterfoot itself is a quintessential Arran village, and the surrounding Machrie Moor is home to Neolithic standing stones, making this corner of the island a powerhouse of both natural beauty and archaeological significance. Keep an eye out for seals basking on the rocks and red squirrels darting through the Torr Righ canopy.
