This 6.8km loop at Meikle Balloch Hill offers a quintessential Moray trail running experience, blending a punchy ascent with fast, flowing descents. Starting from the dedicated parking area, you’ll tackle a steep initial climb to the 366m summit—a vertical challenge that rewards you with panoramic views across the Spey Valley. The terrain consists of wide, well-maintained forest tracks and rugged hill trails, making it an ideal choice for runners looking to transition from road to trail or those wanting a high-intensity hill session. With 147m of elevation gain packed into a short distance, expect a lung-busting start followed by a technical but exhilarating long downhill stretch that lets you really open up your stride.
Located just outside the town of Keith, Meikle Balloch is often referred to as the "Gateway to the Highlands." The hill is steeped in local folklore and is part of a managed forest where the mix of pine and larch provides a changing backdrop throughout the seasons. Runners often share these paths with local buzzards and roe deer, adding to the remote, wild feel of the Moray countryside. Historically, this area has been a central hub for the whisky industry, and on a clear day from the summit, you can spot the distant peaks of the Cairngorms. It’s a favorite spot for local hill runners who appreciate the hill's accessibility and its ability to provide a "proper mountain feel" without requiring a full day's expedition.
