This 8.8km coastal circuit offers a quintessential Scottish running experience, blending rugged Moray Firth views with well-maintained paths. Starting in the charming village of Findochty, runners will tackle an "SL" (Short Local) course that features a manageable 101m ascent, making it hilly enough to build strength without being overwhelming. The terrain is a balanced 50/50 mix of paved surfaces and coastal trails, taking you past the whimsical Pets Cemetery and the rolling greens of Cullen Golf Club. Expect refreshing sea breezes as you navigate the single-track sections near Cullen Bay and Portknockie, where the elevation changes provide stunning vantage points over the rocky shoreline.
Steeped in maritime history, this area is a crown jewel of the North East coast. As you traverse the Moray Coast Trail, you are following in the footsteps of ancient fishing communities: Findochty, locally known as "Finechty," dates back to the 15th century and is famous for its picturesque "painted" harbor. Running through Cullen, you’ll pass beneath the towering 19th-century railway viaducts that once served the Great North of Scotland Railway. Keep a sharp eye on the horizon near Cullen Bay—the Moray Firth is renowned for its resident pod of bottlenose dolphins, often spotted breaching just offshore, providing a spectacular distraction during your harder training miles.
