Conquering Ben Rinnes is a rite of passage for runners in Moray, offering a relentless 7.6km out-and-back challenge that tests both your lungs and your quads. With nearly 500 meters of vertical gain, this route takes you over Round Hill and Roy's Hill before reaching the summit of the peak itself. The terrain is rugged and exclusively unpaved, demanding focused footwork on the steady ascent. Since sections of the run sit well above the 500m mark, you’ll experience true highland exposure; the descent is a thrilling, fast-paced reward for the hard work on the way up, but always keep an eye on the shifting Scottish weather which can roll in rapidly over the granite tors.
Ben Rinnes stands as the highest point in Speyside, acting as a majestic sentinel over the world-famous whisky region below. As you climb, the views open up to reveal a stunning panorama that stretches from the Moray Firth to the distant Cairngorms. Deeply rooted in local folklore and history, the "Ben" has long been a landmark for travelers and distillers alike. Runners will appreciate the granite "tors" or rock formations near the summit, which provide a dramatic backdrop to this classic hill run. After finishing, many locals head into nearby Dufftown—the "Whisky Capital of the World"—to refuel and celebrate a successful summit in the heart of Moray.
