Tackle the rugged beauty of the Pentland Hills with the "Two Hills Two Reservoirs" route, a classic 11.2km loop that perfectly balances hill running with a fast finishes. Starting from Deanburn, you’ll join the iconic Pentland Way to conquer the twin peaks of Turnhouse and Carnethy Hills. With 412m of ascent and sections pushing above 500m in elevation, expect a demanding climb over grassy and rocky terrain that rewards you with panoramic views across Midlothian. The second half of the run shifts gears entirely, transitioning onto tarmac for a gradual, downhill return past the serene waters of Loganlea and Glencorse Reservoirs – a perfect stretch to open up your stride and flush out the lactic acid.
Deep in the heart of the Pentland Hills Regional Park, this area is steeped in Scottish history and natural heritage. As you descend towards Glencorse, you are running through a landscape that served as a backdrop for the 1666 Battle of Rullion Green and has inspired writers like Robert Louis Stevenson for generations. The reservoirs themselves are a staple of Edinburgh’s Victorian-era engineering, providing a tranquil contrast to the exposed, windswept ridges above. Local runners know that the weather here is famously temperamental; a sunny start in Deanburn can quickly turn to mist on Carnethy, so always come prepared for a true Scottish hill running experience.
