Experience the tranquil beauty of Midlothian on this 7.6km loop through Dalkeith Country Park. With a gentle ascent of just 32m, this route is delightfully flat, making it ideal for tempo sessions or a relaxed recovery run. You’ll navigate a versatile mix of terrain, including smooth tarmac lanes and rustic woodland trails that provide a soft landing underfoot. The course offers a perfect blend of sheltered forest sections and open riverside paths, ensuring a scenic backdrop that changes with the Scottish seasons—from vibrant bluebells in spring to rich autumnal golds.
The park itself is steeped in over 300 years of history, centering around the magnificent Dalkeith Palace, once a seat of the Dukes of Buccleuch. As you run, keep an eye out for the ancient oak trees, some of which are believed to be over 900 years old, dating back to the time of David I. The area where the North and South Esk rivers meet is a local highlight, offering a serene atmosphere that feels worlds away from the nearby bustle of Edinburgh. After finishing your 7.6km circuit, the Restoration Yard nearby provides an excellent spot for a post-run coffee in a beautifully converted 18th-century stable yard.
